Sir Evan Morris was the 28th Mayor of Wrexham in 1888 to 1889, He was born on the 25th July 1842 in Wrexham and was the son of Mr Joseph Morris and Grandson of Mr Evan Morris who had a business in Wrexham known as the Cambrian Leather Works, he was from Montgomeryshire and came to Wrexham in 1822. Once Evan had left school, he joined a Mr Deveraux Pugh who was a solicitor, he learnt the job so well he left and started on his own at Temple Row, then at the Priory. He established himself so well he became connected with the development of the Railway Communication’s System in Wrexham. In August 1889, her Majesty Queen Victoria visited Wrexham and to the joy of the inhabitants the Mayor Evan Morris was Knighted to which he became Sir Evan Morris, He was also an Honorary Major in the 1st Battalion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He got married on the 17th September 1872 to Frances Elizabeth the eldest daughter of the Mayor Thomas Rowland and they lived at Roseneath in Wrexham. In the South Aisle of Wrexham Parish Church there is a tablet erected by public subscription with the inscription :- To the glory of god and in beloved memory of Sir Evan Morris J.P., Mayor of Wrexham 1889, who was Knighted by Her Majesty Queen Victoria on the occasion of her visit to the Borough on the 24th August 1889.
