Mr Thomas Edgeworth who became the very first Mayor of Wrexham in 1857 and was our Mayor for two years (1857 – 1859), He was born on the 30th January 1805 , he was the only child of “Thomas & Elizabeth Edgeworth of Bryn-y-grog in Marchwiel. When he grew up and ready to start work, he decided to enter the legal profession, he was articled at Stockport, once he had passed his exams he returned to Wrexham and began to practice as a Solicitor. In 1836 he was appointed as clerk to the Poor Law Guardians, he was also a registrar of the County Court. He was the originator of the Wrexham Market Hall Company and became a Director of the Wrexham, Mold & Connah’s Quay Railway Company. When the Borough of Wrexham was incorporated in 1857, he headed the poll at the election of councillors and was chosen as the First Mayor of Wrexham. Upon his appointment as Mayor he resigned the office as clerk to the Guardians and was succeeded by Mr John Bury who was also a member of the first council in 1857. As Mayor he pushed hard for sanitary reform in Wrexham to help and get the town into a healthy condition. He was married to Eliza Jane Roberts of Welshpool and they had two sons and two daughters. Mr Edgeworth retired in 1866 and died at Bryn-y-grog on the 7th January 1868. Researched by John Davies.
