William Edge Samuel was the 25th Mayor of Wrexham in 1885, He was born in Wrexham on the 21st February 1839 and was a Builder & Contractor who employed 26 men and 5 boys. Amongst many notable buildings he built was the National School on Madeira Hill and the Victoria School in Brook Street, then Grove Park county school and several houses on Fairy Road that you can still see today. Mr William Edge Samuel married a lady named Lucy who passed away in 1876 aged just 24 years. He then married for the second time to Hannah Wilson, they had three sons and three daughters. In 1881 he was living at No 4 Carlton Villas on Sontly road but later moved to Stratford House on Fairy road. He became a member of the Town Council on the 1st November 1877 and became Chairman of the General Purposes Committee. He was also a member of the County Council and a J.P. for both the County and the Borough. He was the father of the council in his day and was respected by both sides of the house. In 1884 he was elected as a member of the newly formed Denbighshire County Council, a position he held until his death. He was also an Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Wrexham in 1911. He passed away on the 24th October 1917 aged 78 years.
