ELIZABETH WIDOW OF CAPTAIN ALEXANDER BARRAT LATE OF TAVISTOCK DEVON WHO DIED MAY 24 1884 AGED 78 YEARS. ALSO EMILY ELDEST DAUGHTER OF ABOVE AND WIDOW OF ELIJAH PEARSE WHO DIED JUNE 10 1893 AGED 60 YEARS ALSO ADA BELOVED DAUGHTER OF THE ABOVE WHO DIED APRIL 16 1896 AGED 28 YEARS. Elizabeth Radford was born about 1807 in Whitchurch, Devon, and on 21 May 1831 she married Alexander Barratt, an agent of mines at Tavistock Parish Church. Alexander had been born in Gwennap, Corwall They settled in Mary Tavy and in 1851 five children were at home. Emily 19 who was a governess, James 15, Amelia 11, Alexander 6. Alexander Barrett died on 1 August 1859 at Tavistock, he left effects of under £700. Elizabeth stayed in Tavistock and in 1861 she was a “landed proprieter” her daughter Amelia was a schoolmistress and her son Alexander was a mining clerk. Also there was her granddaughter Clara A Pearse aged 6. Amelia married Robert Jones on 29th August 1868. JONES-BARRATT-On the 24th inst., at Rhos Church, by the Rev. J. Jones, Mr R. Jones, draper, to Amelia, third daughter of the late Capt. A. Barratt, of Tavistock. In 1871 Elizabeth was in Bryn yr Owen, Esclusham below where her son Alexander 26 was a mining accountant. Alexander had married Helen Neilson in 1866. By 1881 Elizabeth was at London House, Brook Steet, Ruabon , she was with Amelia and Robert Jones, and now classed as a “lady” . Elizabeth died on 24 May 1884, her death was reported in the Wrexham Advertiser. MRS. BARRATT, LONDON HOUSE This much respected lady, the widow of Captain Alexander Barratt, late of Tavistock, Devon, and mother to Mr Barratt, late manager of Bryn-yr-Owen Colliery, and of Mr Jones, London House, died on May 24th, having attained the ripe age of 78. The funeral took place on the 30th ult., at the Wrexham new cemetery, and was attended amongst others by the relatives, together with the Rev. Wm. Foulkes, pastor, who officiated, the deacons of the Hill-street English Church, of which church the deceased was for many years a member. It was also met at the cemetery by the Revs. H. B. Williams and Edward Jerman of Wrexham. A funeral service was held in the church on Sunday evening, when an appropriate sermon based on Daniel 12th chap., 13th verse, was preached by the Rev. William Foulkes to a large congregation. In 1854 Emily Barratt had married Elijah Pearse, a copper miner at Tavistock. He was also from Mary Tavy, and the son of Joseph and Lucy. Elijah was at the Wheat Russell mine in 1855. The couple were in Tavistock in 1861 but they had moved to Aberystwyth by 1869 as there was court case held there. Zophar Humphreys v. Elijah Pearse. (defendant). This was an action brought to recover the sum of £10. 10s. for making a survey of the Glanrheidol Mine. The defence set up was that the charge was exorbitant, and that £2 2s. would be ample remuneration. (Several witnesses were called on both sides. Judgment for defendant with costs. In 1871 Elijah was a mining agent in Aberystwyth. Zophar became the landlord of the Heart of Oak Inn. Elijah and his family moved soon after as in June 1871 the license of the Southville Hotel, Bedminster, Somerset was transferred to Elijah Pearse. Elijah died there on 24 June 1877 but Emily and the family stayed on there, in 1881 she had taken over and was the licenced victualler. Her daughter Clara 26 was the barmaid. Her other children with her were Frederick 22, Bertha 19, Lizzie 17, Ada 14, Katie 12 and Sidney who was 7. In September 1883 there was a report in the Yeovil news that “A lad named Pearse , the only son of Mrs Pearse of the Southville Hotel had drowned in the Cut.” (In 1881 Emily had two sons, Frederick and Sidney, and a check for a death found that it was Sidney aged 9 who had died.) In January 1884 there was another announcement; Lizzie Pearse had died on January 12 at the Southville Hotel, aged 19. In March 1884 Emily decided to leave , the hotel was advertised as “to be disposed of by private treaty” and on June 19 1884 the transfer of licence from Emily Pearse to Emelie Hurn was granted. As her mother had died 24 May 1884 in Rhos it was not a good time for Emily. She had lost her son, daughter and mother in less than a year. It`s not known were Emily went from Bedminster, but in 1891 she was with her sister Amelia Jones in Maelor View, Rhos. Robert R Jones, draper, 43 was in a house full of women, his wife Amelia, two daughters, Emily Pearse his sister in law and her daughter Ada, plus two female servants .
